CHAPTER NINE

A WEEK LATER…

A whole week had passed, and still no one knew anything. Bishop was still in the ICU and his condition was getting better as time passed. Laurence been driving all over Brooklyn looking for answers that no one seemed to have, while Sharice was over at the hospital with Ann. It was going on noon when Laurence arrived at the Maple Tower apartments. He’d been to their trap spot on Walton St. and the one on Dumont Avenue, and still nobody had any news for him.

His next stop was at the Hall’s Bar on South 4th Street. He wanted to stop there earlier, but he had to check on a few things at the time. He also wanted to call Sharice, but he figured she was sleeping and knew she was tired enough. After he checked on things at the bar, he would go to the hospital to pick her up and bring her home because he knew she was tired. He really appreciated her for being there for him and his family through all the shit that’d been going on. He didn’t know a girl out there that would stick around this long; for that, he was forever grateful for Sharice being in his life.

When he arrived at the bar, he drove around back to park his car. Just as he suspected, a black Mercedes passed by in his rearview mirror. He spotted them following him since he left Maple Towers, but kept going because he wanted to confirm his suspicions. What he really wanted to know was who set the order for him to be tailed in the first place. Somebody knew something, and it was only a matter of time before someone spoke up.

He got out of his car with his piece in hand, ready for whatever was around the corner. He got to the corner and saw no one in sight. He figured the people that were following him left, so he went inside the bar. Bishop’s bartender/doorman Mr. Lester had his sawed off shotgun pointed at the door as Laurence walked in, ready to kill anyone who walked in.

“Relax Mr. Lester, it’s me Laurence,” he said as he came out of the shadows that covered the doorway.

“Can’t be too careful. Not after what happened to Bishop. It’s fucked up what they did to him,” Mr. Lester said with a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

“Yeah, that’s why I’m here,” Laurence said as he pulled the bar stool out to have a seat.

“Oh yeah? If you came for the 411 on his shooter young blood, you came to the wrong place. Cause the streets ain’t talking. You know that,” Mr. Lester said as he took a puff from the cancer stick. “However, the cops showed up here earlier. That uh…Brody cat. His fat ass was looking for you,” Mr. Lester said.

“What the fuck did he want?” Laurence asked.

“My guess is leverage. Why else would the cops be here? You know they always hit up this place after something goes down, especially if it has something to do with Bishop,” Mr.
